Temporal Decay is an instrumental music project written, produced and recorded by composer/guitarist/audio engineer John Howarth IV. The style of music is best described as post-rock, though it could also be categorized as progressive rock or metal due to it's heavier and darker undertone. John's unique sound blends distorted and clean-tone guitars with orchestral colors, powerful rock drums, and synthesizers. The music forcefully yet eloquently propels the listener on a journey through many different emotions.
The word Temporal is defined as "of or relating to time". In psychology, the phrase "Temporal Decay" refers to the fading of a memory over time. The music of Temporal Decay was created to express emotions and memories that would be difficult or impossible to explain in words. The Temporal Decay logo features two distinctive elements: a clock face to represent time, and an inverted pilcrow symbol which forms the letter "P". Familiar to most people as the symbol for a new paragraph, the pilcrow originated as a symbol to indicate a new train of thought. In the Temporal Decay logo, the inverted pilcrow is symbolic of a fading memory being recalled for mental reflection/processing.
Isolate (2022) consists of 10 songs and is themed around the grieving process. The first song on the album, Prosper, was intended as a point of reference to represent life prior a traumatic event. The second song, Contagion, describes the traumatic event. Tracks 3-9 each represent specific stages of the grieving process. The final song Reprieve combines the emotions of relief, excitement, sadness, and strength to provide a sense of closure for the listener.
